My name is Julie Kalk, but most people call me JUUUL.
As a little girl, I was already fascinated by my mother's analogue camera. Looking through the viewfinder, I discovered the world around me with curiosity: butterflies fluttering from flower to flower, shadows stretching longer as the day came to an end, and sunlight constantly changing colour as it danced across the water. More than twenty years later, it is still those details, light and colour, that continue to inspire me.
In 2022, I completed a year in Applied Photography and Visual Communication and launched my own business, BYJUUUL. At the same time, I continued studying at Erasmus University Rotterdam and later at the University of Amsterdam.
While exploring the theory behind communication and human behaviour, I gained experience in capturing subtle moments, the interaction between people and their surroundings, and the stories that unfold naturally. Behind the camera, I discovered that people - and even places - can speak without words. A single photograph can tell a story, evoke an emotion, or bring a meaningful moment back to life.
The combination of photography and my background in communication forms the foundation of my work. It allows me to create not just beautiful images, but photographs that tell a story.
